i loved all your photos. sarah, you look amazing pregnant and definately have that motherhood pregnancy glow. everyone said i was glowing too. it is just such a wonderful thing to bring a baby into this world. i read on a anne geddes poster,"that having a child is like carrying a piece of your heart on the outside of your body." it is so true too. that is so funny to bec. we have the same john lennon things also like the bouncer and quite a few outfits but dennis picked out little bugs of the nursery theme. but my bathroom is full of anne geddes pictures. i just bought them after i had nola. i am so excited for you and dave. i got kate a little outfit, you should be getting it in the mail. but now that i seen her closet i think i should of got her something else. haha. her closet looks just like nola's. i guess a girl could never have to many cloths. nola has cloths she never even got to wear but maybe one time. anyway, i really enjoyed your pictures. i can't wait to see your little angel on here next. well you take care and i will have to mail you a pregnancy picture of me. i was huge. i went from weighing 116# to 156# so i gained 40lbs total. i never skipped my vanilla ice cream at night or after lunch. i totally loved being pregnant and feeling her kick around in there and when she had hickups. which she still gets all the time. well i gotta go before i talk all day i sure wish we could get together but hopefully in a year when you get back to the states. take care, love heatherheather baxmeyer

I love your webpage. I actually found it in my search for some info about Lajes. I lived there from 1983-1986 but I am sure things have changed a some since my being there. My husband and I will be PCSing there in April and we are on a search for some info to help us prepare for our move. One of the biggest questions right now seems to be about a lawnmower. (haha) Do we need to bring one? For some reason we are stuck on finding an answer for this. Your daughter shares a birthday with our son, he turned four on December 2. We also have a daughter who is eight months old. It is going to be so different to be there as an adult. I must admit I am a tad bit apprehensive about returning there but I am also excited. My husband is active duty and I am a "stay at home" mom whiel working part time. Oh! That brings up another question--do you know if people who live there are allowed to run a business out of their home? Currently, I run a Pampered Chef business and I am curious of I will be able to continue doing it there on the island? Anyhow, thank you for allowing us to enjoy your website and maybe (more than likely) we will be running into you on the island sometime!! Thank you!

I am looking at your site to get more information on this island. I just refinanced my home and hope to have a few dollars left over from the whole deal to send my wife and her sister to your country-- so they can see where their (now deceased) father was from. This is going to be a surprise so I am looking into tour groups, etc.
Neither of them speaks any Portugese- what can I say...they're a couple of Portagees! :-)
If you have any information on tour groups - or anything to avoid or any other advice to help me plan a good trip - I would certainly appreciate it.

Dave and Sarah,
I was born on Lajes Air Force Base 27 years ago but my family moved back to the U.S. before I was old enough to remember anything about the island. I've always been curious about life in the Azores and your website has provided some beautiful pictures. It looks like a heavenly place to live. Thanks to your pictures, I feel a little more familiar with a place I can't remember. Thank you, Amy

Thanks for a current update of Lajes. I lived there during the middle 1950's with my parents and sister. You probably know this, I will tell you anyway. The high school kids who attended school on the military base at Lajes have reunions all of the time. There is one scheduled for 2002 and 2003. Just about all of us had a great experience when we lived there.
Thanks for the setting up your website so I could recall old memories.

Hi, Again,
I was looking at your color map of Terceria, and I would like to get several for my friends and me. Where did you get the map? Was in from the island or does some state-side company issue it? If it is only available in the Azores, can you tell me the cost and the postage needed to mail four (4) copies to New Orleans. I will send you a postal money order or cash, whatever you want. You can reach me at my
e-mail address at AOL.
Thanks again.

I appreciate your web site, we will soon be PCS'ing to the azores in may 2002. We have alot of questions about the island. Is it best to buy a car on the island, or ship our own? What is housing like, and how long does it take to get on base housing?

Congradulations to the new parents. I found your website while looking for information on the Azores. I have been looking for people that I was staioned with there years before. I was stationed there in the Navy from 11/89-04/91. I also gave birth to my son there in 08/90 during the Gulf War. The Lajes AirBase was used for refueling all planes heading to Saudi for the war. Seeing the pictures brought back a lot of memories. It is truly a beautiful place. I think it is one of the safest places that one can raise a family. Good luck and God Bless.Amy Richards

hi Sara and Dave,
I stubbled on your page looking up some info on the Azores for a friend. I loved it. This might seem funny, but my family are your portuguese neighbours. I have family that live on eihter side of your housing complex. If you're coming down the street that passes infront of the highschool and turn right rather thaan left to go to your house you will pass a house, about 4-5 from your complex, with an arched veranda and set back from the road(there's usually a cow in the front yard):that's my aunt's house. My grandmother lives on the other side of the complex, in Serra de Santiago, (on the same street) passed the church. It's so interesting to see you both enjoying it so! I visit your area quite often as i work for a canadian air line that flies to Terceira all summer...I'm sure you know the airline, quite well. :) Sarah, when i saw your picture on the page, i could have sworn that i had seen you before. Perhaps we passed each other on the street shopping one day in Praia...it's possible. Well glad to hear that you both enjoy the splendor and beauty of Terceira. Enjoy the both of you. Congradulations on your new baby as well.

Just wanted to say hi and introduce ourselves. I (Miles) have orders to Lajes this May (since I'm a 3C0x1 I'll be working somewhere in the NCC) and was looking for info on the Azores when I found your website -- which, BTW is very well done.
We're currently stationed at Fairchild AFB WA where we've been for the past three years. It's been good, but we're looking forward to spending time in the Azores!
Since Barb is due to deliver our fourth child in July, she's very intereseted in any information you could share about hospital conditions there. She's not expecting any complications, but giving birth in another country makes her a little nervous.
It's my understanding that the lower enlisted ranks don't have much of a waiting period for on-base housing. How difficult is it for domestic help and fresh bread deliveries to get on base?
Thank you for having such a great website for a resource! And we really appreciate your taking time to answer our mundane questions ;-)

Hi Dave $ Sarah,
Thank you for such an interesting and informative homepage. We have visited it several times and have enjoyed it tremondously. My purpose for writing you is that my family and I will be moving to Lajes from Andersen AFB, Guam in mid-July and will be shipping a cat and dog. I was wondering if you had an e-mail address and phone number to the Kennel at Lajes where we can attempt to make reservations for the boarding of our pets in advance. Also, are there any other pet kennels on the island that you are aware of that you would recommnd in the event the base kennel is booked up? I know this is a lot to ask, but any advice on the shipment and kenneling of pets you can provide us will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Dave and Sarah,
It was so nice to find your homepage while I was researching information on Lajes. I lived at Lajes from January 1973 until August 1975, and loved every minute. I have always wanted to return for a visit, but never had the opportunity.
Now, my husband and I are stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, and we are trying to arrange a return visit for me. My husband has never been to Lajes, but is willing to explore it with me.
I am checking into Space A flights from Germany and would like to stay at billeting on base. If not, I will look for something in Praia. If you have any suggestions for places to stay or where to rent a car, please let us know. We are hoping to come around June 29 or 30. I know that things have probably really changed since I lived there, but I am very excited about finally having the chance to revisit the island.
My husband Peter is a retired Army pilot. I am an auditor for the Department of Defense. I know that we are quite a bit older than you, but may be we can meet you and say hello if we make it over.
Thanks for all the info on Lajes.

Landed at Lajes in 1959, on our way to Rota, Spain, when flying with the Navy. Landed there MANY times supporting the 1973 Israeli Oct. 1973 war while flying on C-5s.
My question is this.
We will be there on Nov. 8 this year on the last sailing of the original love boat, Pacific Princess, on our way to Rome. We are supposed to dock at Pinta (Punta?) Delgada. What would be the taxi fare/miles to the airbase, if you know it? Want to pick up some Mattuse Rose. The package store still on the flightline? Of course that was almost 30 years ago.

Iam a 23 year old from Los Angeles,CA. My parents are from Lajes and moved to LA before I was born. I went to Lajes in the summer of 99 and fell in love with it. I was wondering if you guys could give me any info on finding a civilian job out there. I speak read and write fluently in Portuguese. I even have a cousin that works at the base as a Portuguese citizen named Fernando Mendes. I even have a cousin who owns the Galp Gas station in Lajes. And beleive it or not my grandpa has a street named after him in Lajes called Francisco Rodrigues de Lima. I would really appreiate it if you can give some info on civialian work.
Thanks for taking the time.Michael

Great site!! I was station at Lajes in 79-80. The pictures do bring back some good memories. I had an apartment off base down next to the old Portugese officers beach club. Spent many evening sitting in one of the patio dining areas alng the sea wall enjoying a bottle of the restaurants own wine. It was a strange assignment at that time. The Air Force drove the vehicles, Navy had the airplanes and the Army ran the dock facilities. That and in the winter never knowing if the Exchange or commissary would have anything, it all depneded on the weather. The winter storms could keep the supplys from coming in. But, I still count Lajes as one of the best assignments I had.Bob

I have questions about those beautiful Islands, about the life there today compared to when I lived there in 1944/45. I arrived, attached to the 96th C.B.'s; who helped build Lages field. It was then spelled Lagens. My wife, Ellie, and I some years later lived on another group of islands, equally as beautiful, in the Pacific. Yes, our fiftyeth state Hawaii. Hi,
I came across your website seaching for information on the Acores. I can't tell enough how wonderful your web site is. I will be traveling to Terceira in 2 years for what I hope to be a month. I am trying to get myself as prepared as possible in advance. Mostly out of excitement. I was born in Angra. My family moved to California when I was three years old. It was first meant to be a vacation however due to an earthquake, they decided to stay here and we've never been back. It's been 23 years. I have family prodominatley in Angra and some in Biscoits that I know of. Thank you sooooo much for the beautiful pictures!!! You made my day!!

Hi Dave, Sarah, and Kathryn, we enjoyed reading your accounts of life at the Azores, and also viewing the pictures you provided. I am currently assigned in Korea, but have a following assignment to Lajes Field scheduled for next Mar 03. My wife and two daughters are currently in Colorado, where we have a house in the Denver area. Can you give us an insight on the living arrangements on base for a Tech Sgt with a family of 4, and is it true base-housing comes pre-furnished? Also, I heard that the days of buying off-base housing are over...is that still the case?
Once again, great job on the web-page, and I look forward to hearing from you.
And congratulations on your recent promotion, and the birth of your beautiful daughter.

Hello! My name is Christina and I am 15 years old. My family and I recently got orders to Lajes and to tell you the truth I'm not to exited about it. I really would have liked to move to the states since we have been stationed in Germany for the past 6 years. I found your website and it seemed like you were very happy with your assigment to Lajes. It gave me a little bit of hope that it might not be such a bad place to live. Thank you for your website and if you have any other information that may be useful to a teenage moving to the Azores please email me.Christina Patti

My son is in the Air Force and is being transferred to Azores in Nov, 2002. Just wanted to see what it will be like for him while he is there. He is Sgt Joshua B Melton - a 10 year veteran now. Any suggestions on off base accomodations or would it be better on-base for a single person? Thanks for any information. Hope you and your family are doing great.Patricia Bobbitt

My husband and I were stationed at Lajes from 17 Aug 57 to 17 Aug 59..went with one child, came home with 3! We so enjoyed your pictures. Terceira is so updated from the olden days!! And it seems that there are very good roads now. I am sure that your life there is very different from ours..We did have "Marias" who cleaned and baby sat and sometimes washed all our clothes in the kitchen sink. But communication with the rest of the world was difficult..I remember one winter when the weather was bad and there was also a big SAC thing going on and we did not have newspapers and magazines at the PX for three weeks. The Tv station operated sporadically with 12-18 month old programs. Christmas carols in May were common..shopping was a pain..when "good" stuff arrived at the PX the word was passed very quickly and all the base jammed it buying all the goodies from Europe..china, "hi-fi's", jewelry! We found your site just surfing thru Lajes sites. Do you ever shop in ANgra at the linen stores.
We were able to order beautiful bed and table lines that were hand embroidered..in colors and fabrics we picked. Enjoy your stay there...it is a wonderful experience..and it looks so modern!! back in the 50's it was almost like living in the 1700's for some of the local people...Good luck..Bill and Ellen DowlingEllen Dowling

Your pictures brought tears to my eyes. Happy memories! I lived on Terciera from 1961-1969. Our family lived on Santa Rita hill. Is it still there? I'm the yearbook editor in the Taurus 69" yearbook. It was an AFB then, my Dad was in charge of the PMEL lab on the AFB. Thanks for the photos! Frank Fegundas de Silva was a good friend of the family, he probably still works in the base exchange system? He lives in Alguava (sp?) Our daughter Joyce McQuaid sent your Homepage to us. We arrived on Tericera in 1961 staying for 13 years. Our youngest child was two. Joyce said she sent the wrong name of our friend who now works in the BX (Francisco Fagundes Costa) Started as our caddie and became a good friend.(golf was a big thing then and now.) Tell him "hi" if you come across him. Joyce had forgotten and gave his last name a de Silva...we called him Frank. I'm so glad you appreciate your island home......it played a big part in our lives. We still think of it fondly and of the friends we made while there.Enjoyed your baby's pictures...the island looks the same.Charlotte Dahlen

Hello:
Love your website & congrats. on your new baby girl! Our son is stationed on Terceria now and he and his wife are expecting their first baby in Oct. However, they're sending Jon & Megan (our son & daughter-in-law) to Andrews AFB for the birth. That's good for us because we'll get to see Jon, Megan and our new grandbaby but it sure is stressing out Jon and Megan not knowing much about the "nesting program". You do not know me but I was shown your homepage from a friend that found it on the net. We were looking at the pictures and reconized the house that you live in. The mian reason we reconized it is because we used to live in the house on the bottom of your now :-). We lived there from 1998-2000. We really enjoyed the Azores and it is cool to see how the bushes out front of the building are growing. We were there when they were ready to plant them. It is also nice to see the park out back finished. When we left they had it all torn down. My daughter(8 years old now) loved that park and was excited when I told her that was the park she used to play on 2 years ago. Thank you for sharing and enjoy the Azores.Joy Jencks

Hey there!
I found your site while searching for pictures of Biscoitos. We were stationed at Lajes from 1986-1989. My husband was in the AF (retired now)and our sons attended the school outside the gate. We lived in Agualva before we moved on base. We fellowshipped at Azorean Baptist Church on Fontinhas (sp?) road. My hubby helped with the design of the parsonage, and we all chipped in to relocate the rock wall beside the parking lot (that is, if the wall is still there..)
What a treat to find your site. We still miss Terceira and are familiar with many of the places you mention. Living there was a challenging and wonderful experience. Your site brings back many memories. What a blessing God has given you at this time in your lives. Treasure it!

My wife and I lived in the Azores between 87-90. We were saved there when a Baptist missionary headed us off at our friend's house in Fonte Bastard and we became members of the mission Azorean Baptist Church. We started out living in the town of Fontinas and then were one of the first families to move in to the type of housing you live in now. One of our daughters was born there. Now that she's a teenager, she's curious of her birthplace. We'd like to thank you for sharing your photos to help her see how pretty the place is. God bless.

Great website! My wife and I are thinking of ranking the Azores high on our preference list for a PCS in July 03. We were glad to see your website- most people who comment on the Azores were just there for a stop-over and it is hard to get a feel for how life on the island is. One question we have is: How easy and costly is it to get to Europe (Portugal or any other location). Are military hops readily available? Is there a chance you could get "bumped" from the flight? What activities are available for school age kids?

Enjoyed your photos. My ancestors are from Terciera. Would it be possible to send me one of the JPEGs of the city that shows a typical street with houses? I would use it for my family history book.
Thank you.Charlene Whittlesey

I lived in Praia for 18 months and then bought a house on Santa Rita hill and lived there for 18 months. I worked at the base library for 3 years. I enjoyed my stay in Lajes very much and have thought many times of returning. My sons and their families want to return also. Maybe one of these days we will get the chance. I have many fond memories. Anyone knowing how to contact Col. Roger Taylor/Comm.Sqd, please give me an email note. ThanksGenie Donley

Just looking for info about USAF at Lajes Field, and came across your homepage. Very nice. I was a prop-mechanic in the USAF at Lajes from Nov. 64 to May 66, and I found the people on Teceira as friendly as could be. Un-
fortunately, I never kept the names of the locals, but I do have fond memories of them and my time there. Good luck!Ken (Ski) Tanski

Could you please tell me if you can recall the transmitter site that was a few miles south of Lajes Field. I was there in 1960 (many years ago) with the US Air Force as a communications technician. I wonder if it is still there? It was located almost in the center of the island. Thank you.David Knepper

I was assigned to Lajes Field beginning Easter Sunday Morning, 1957. I left there in August 1958. I lived in the barracks and worked on the flight line and in the communications building (where the telephone switch was located). I stopped in about 1972 on a commercial flight to Europe but it was late at night. One of our great thrills was meeting the flights with dependents. While there I took a flight in a KC97 to refuel a B47 in the air. You can see I am a little dated. I would love to visit there again. I would appreciate it much more.Charles Chittum

Enjoyed the site! I was stationed in Lajes at what was the Naval Air Facility at the north end of Lajes Field. I was fortunate in this duty station because my Dad married my Mom (who was born in Lajes) there around 1950. I really enjoyed meeting all the relative but they tried to get me married off while I was there!
Hope you enjoy the rest of your tour if you are still there!Manuel Miller

Your pictures make it look like a very nice place. Not as isolated as one might have thought. Your photos were great!
Do you miss anything like McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Movies, etc (Sorry, had to ask)
And if no one has told you . . . Thank
you for you service and sacrifice for our country and its people. Its a debt we will never be able to repay.

Dear Dave,
Have been snooping around all the web sites that I can find regarding Tericia, Azores, I lived at Lajes ca: 1958, 59, & 1960. My dad was in the U.S. Air Force. My youngest brother was born at the military hospital there in 1959. I was 7 at the time, and still recall many recollections and memories.
I recall living in a small home on (I think) Azalia Dr. directly opposite of the military hospital. I'm really interested in traveling to Lajes. It's very difficult to get there from here (Tacoma, WA) My spouse is an employee of Northwest Airlines/K.L.M. consequently I have access to free airfare, however it's still not a real streamlined flight. Can you enlighten me on best way to fly there from the mainland. I can fly into Lisbon via K.L.M. however if I can avoid that I will.
Please advise.

Sarah,
I came across this website as I was researching our up coming relocation to Lajes. Then I had a friend show this same one as I was talking about it yesterday at bible study. Aparently she had emailed you when her husband was considering relocating there. Anyway we are awaiting our orders and will have a definite date soon, I hope. My husband is working here at Westover in Massachusettes and emailed them to accept the job as the Club Manager at Jajes in December. We have 2 children AJ 11yrs and Abbey 8 yrs. I would love to here from you and get the personal scoop on the area as you can only tell so much from pictures on the internet. Ken told my husband and many other who have passed through Westover that it is beautiful. I hope to hear from you and hopefully we will meet soon. Thank you for your time and just as I send out this email this is just one more step of faith on the "Great Adventure" I have so many questions I hope you could answer for me. God Bless you and thanks again for the time! SusanSusan Gontarek
